Mary Joe Washington passed away September 19, 2022 at her residence in Pheba at the age of 94. She was born September 8, 1928 to the late Joe Boykin Washington and Mary Emily Lang Washington. She received her Masters degree in 1967 from Mississippi State University. She taught in the Mathiston School District for many years, then served as superintendent for Clay County Schools before her retirement.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Friday September 23, 2022 at Pheba Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Rhodes officiating. Visitation will be 10 AM to service time Friday at Pheba Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Starkville. Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Washington III, Joby Washington, Mark Stovall, Patrick Garrard, Mason Washington, Eddie Strickland. The family would like to extend a thanks to her special caregivers, Irene, Carol, Julie, and NM Home Health and NM Hospice.
She is survived by her sister, Alma Dee Washington of Pheba; nephew, Bob Washington (Brenda) of Pheba; nieces, Dr. Kay Washington (Bill Patterson) of Nashville, TN, Amy Garrard (Blake) of Pheba; great nieces, Jennifer Stovall (Mark), Kathleen Carmichael (Taylor); great nephews, Robert Washington (Miranda), Joby Washington (Morgan), Patrick Garrard; great-great nieces and nephews, Kaley, Rivers Anne, Walker, Mason, McKenzie, Mary Ava, Ella, Spencer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Pat Washington; sister-in-law, Anne Washington.
