Betty O’Barr, aged 86, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday August 5, following a short illness. She was born January 8, 1940 to Gertrude Franks and William Taylor in LePanto, Arkansas. She moved to Houston, MS as a young teenager where she met and married her husband J.L. O’Barr, Jr. They moved to Okolona, MS and raised their two daughters while enjoying riding horses, motorcycles in the Kilgore Hills, and lots of fishing. She loved to sew and play the piano. She was an active member of the Carnation Baptist Church. They later moved to West Point where she was a member and taught Sunday School at Siloam Baptist Church. She later joined The First Pentecostal Church of West Point where she made many friends. She gave devotional sermons on a weekly basis at the local nursing homes as a volunteer. Later in life she began painting and enjoyed doing portraits of her family.
Preceded in death by her parents, her Step mother Peggy Taylor, her husband J.L. O’Barr Jr., her brother Tommy Taylor, sister Martha Jane Taylor, sister Gladys Brooks, half-sister Bonnie Minard, half-sister Debbie Ludwig, and half-brother Larry Taylor.
She is survived by her daughter Cindy O’Barr, daughter Virginia Kelley, brother Donnie Taylor, half-sister Cathy Rogers, granddaughter Jannie Peel, grandson Kyle Peel (Traci), grandson Hunter Kelley (Harley), granddaughter Lindsey Gregg (Glenn), and 4 great grandchildren, Ava, Remington, Molly, and Hayes.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday August 8, at 11:00 am at Arbor Grove Cemetery in Houston, Ms. with Charles Sculley officiating. Memorials may be made to the Arbor Grove Cemetery Fund or The First Pentecostal Church in West Point.
